Taken from the County of Lake Website Health Services Department – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE dated June 19, 2009: “In response to public complaints of foul odors and floating scum on the lake surface, Environmental Health has performed bacteriologic water testing in the affected areas and has determined the observations are not related to a sewage discharge. A sampling and analysis done by Lake County Vector Control District indicates the presence of lyngbya, a relatively uncommon form of blue-green algae bloon in Clear Lake. Some types of blue-green algae can release toxins and allergens in the water. Lyngbya, the identified species, is known to cause skin irritation resulting in dermatitis. County Health Officer Dr. Karen Tait advises the public to keep away from areas with visible algae mats and to avoid direct contact with affected water, including drinking the water and recreational activities such as swimming, wading, and water skiing (from the water in these areas)”. www.co.lake.ca.us
According to an article in the Lake County Record-Bee dated Saturday, June 27, 2009, by Denise Rockerstein (Staff Reporter) which states according to Lakeshore Bait and Tackle Owner Bob Rider he has experienced a decline in his business due to this algae bloom. He said he understands that the alage presence is a nuisance for the people; however, he said it’s healthy for the fish. “It’s very healthy for the lake. It just interferes with what people want to do”, he said. Rider continued, “The fishing is still good if you know how to fish through the stuff. It’s inconvenient for the people but the fish are thriving. We are just going to need to wait this one out”. – For more information on this go to www.record-bee.com.
I say mother nature does what she wants. Clear Lake is and will continue to be a beautiful and picture-perfect place to visit and live.
Overall activity and sales for real estate and homes here in Lake County is still quite slow compared to the expected seasonal increase during this time of year.
Besides the continued mortgage problems and foreclosures there are many potential buyers ‘waiting’ to see if prices drop further.
Home prices in most categories appear to continue dropping although it is most apparent with entry level homes in subdivisions or on city lots. Homes and property on Clear Lake hold their value stronger with a limited supply, but buyers are still slow to make an offer offer and are looking for a ‘deal’ so activity is still slow.
In the waterfront home category (channel front) there have been many foreclosures. Competing sellers have been reducing prices trying to attract a buyer as there is limited activity.
Most people agree that eventually the real estate market will improve, but the question how soon.
Otherwise, mortgage rates are still quite reasonable at around 6% and it is a great time to buy with all the lower priced homes to choose from.

‘Lakebed Management is responsible for maintaining the public trust lands below the highwater mark (7.79 Rumsey) in Clear Lake in accordance with Lake County code, Chapter 23, the Shoreline Ordinance, and Chapter 639 in the State Statutes of 1973. The Lakebed Division processes permits and encroachment leases for all structures in the lake below 7.79′ on the local Rumsey gauge. Lakebed maintains navigation aides, swim markers and swim areas; performs water quality monitoring; and provides support to the Sheriff’s Department (CREWS), Department of Fish and Game, Corps of Engineer, and State Lands Commission. Lake enhancement programs such as algae management are also the responsibility of Lakebed Management.’
